Why Bamboo?

When we first start talking about Bubba Bambu and the fact that all of our clothes are made from bamboo, most people give us a quizzical look and question it. I must admit that prior to looking into it I would have associated bamboo with garden canes or the gorgeous swirly stick that comes in a bouquet of flowers! Those times seem long ago! Bamboo both as a plant and a fabric have a range of benefits that make it both environmentally friendly and one of the softest materials you are ever likely to touch!

The magic of bamboo fabric

  • Bamboo is the perfect material to compliment the gentle softness of a baby’s skin. The unique properties of bamboo mean that there are no rough edges and this results in a silk-like luxurious feel that makes you want to wrap yourself up in it – think cashmere standards, that’s how soft we are talking!
  • Bamboo also has the "magical" ability to regulate body temperature which means your child will be comfortable in our clothing whatever the weather!
  • Bamboo adds warmth in cool conditions yet also manages to helps keep you cool when it’s warm.
  • Bamboo has antifungal properties and is naturally antibacterial as bacteria don’t live well in the fabric. It doesn’t get smelly and no nasty bugs hiding away in there!

Bamboo and Sensitive skin

Bamboo is FABULOUS for sensitive skin – well, to be honest, its fabulous for ALL skin types but for those who do suffer with sensitive skin, bamboo may just be that “miracle” that you are looking for. Here’s why:

Bamboo is hypoallergenic - Many people who have allergic reactions to other fibres, even natural fibres, don’t tend to experience this with bamboo. This is because the natural bamboo fibres are round and organically smooth, they don’t have the sharp offshoots that are found in other fibres which means bamboo is so luxuriously soft and wont rub harshly against the skin. In addition, no chemicals are used to cultivate bamboo unlike other fabrics. No harsh chemicals equals nothing to irritate the skin!

Bamboo is moisture wicking meaning it absorbs and evaporates moisture more quickly than cotton, so whether it’s a dribbling baby, a sweaty child or a combination of both(!) bamboo clothing will help keep them fresh all day and stop the chaffing that can happen with damp materials rubbing against delicate skin. In fact, will not only remain soft but bamboo helps the skin breath.

Breathable fabric that remains soft is clearly a good option for any baby or child but particularly for those with eczema or other sensitive skin conditions. Children who suffer from eczema need cool and dry conditions and synthetic materials do not allow this. Bamboo has been shown to help eczema suffers as unlike with other materials it doesn’t ever feel abrasive and wont aggravate skin conditions. Our Bamboo Bubby bags are perfect for baby’s as they have not only all the benefits stated above but also fold down mitts over baby’s had to prevent any scratching through the night.

Bamboo derived viscose

Bamboo as a fabric is a pretty new concept here in the UK and as such has not yet been recognised as a fibre within the EU. As Bubba Bambu are a UK company we have to follow the minefield of rules and regulations that are set out within the EU as regards labeling. This means that although the items we sell are made from bamboo, we can not put this on the label! Crazy, right?! This is why on the labels of ours (and many other companies) it says bamboo derived viscose. Its not a term we like or would want to use, as who likes the sound of viscose?! You can however, rest assured that there is nothing synthetic about our products and were we living in Australia or other many non EU countries, the label would state bamboo.

Bamboo and the environment

Trivia time - Who knew that bamboo is in fact the fastest growing plant in the world? Thanks to speedy regrowth rates stocks quickly replenish themselves making it a sustainable product. It grows in diverse climates and can grow on slopes where other plants would not be viable making the most of the land that would otherwise be unusable for crops. You also get 10 times the amount of bamboo per acre than cotton. Bamboo plants don’t need to be protected by pesticides, they naturally repel them meaning not only are there no nasty pesticides being sprayed onto the earth, but none near your baby’s skin. Bamboo is simply as natural a material as you can get.

At Bubba Bambu, we are very aware of our responsibility to leave our footprint on the planet in a positive way and we as a company will recurrently look to ways in which we can do this. This includes the products that we use, the way we communicate and ensuring the companies we work with share the same values. We know how important it is to do as much as possible to leave our children a healthy planet in which to grow. We assess this regularly and welcome any suggestions of how to continually improve on this front.
